Nc Fishing

Well just got back from my annual fishing trip to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. We went out 60-80 miles this year and once again had a great time. We mainly go to catch tuna but we only caught 7 this trip. We did however catch a limit of dolphin (mahi-mahi, not flipper) and I caught my first sailfish (released). Unfortunately, most of the photos did not come out too good (funny thing - the boat kept moving).

Nice fish Mike! We leave this Saturday. Three family trip to Corolla, and the other two guys with me don't fish, so I'm limited to surf fishing in the morning before everybody wakes up. Best I've done was a 23" flounder. Still haven't figured out how to catch blues or stripers down there from shore. I used to use mole crabs for bait in Florida with great success, so I'm going to give them a try for the first time this year. Unfortunately, doesn't look like I'm diving this year either, but that's ok. Family trip revolving mostly around bogie boarding and fun with the kids.

I love it down there. No where near as crowded as Ocean City and they have all of the same entertainment. Outer Banks have nicer beaches ans better fishing.

Charlie, drive down to Oregon Inlet (southern end of the island) and look into near shore fishing or inlet fishing. They are not too expensive and your non-fishing buddies may even go for it. There are also A LOT of people who surf fish down there. I caught a small bluefish on a piece of shrimp while surf fishing down there a few years ago (that is the only thing I have ever caught surf fishing)

Wow!

Tuna belly makes good sushi or good discus food (according to J Watley):) I'm glad you had a good time.

Hey Mike, What a beautiful Sailfish. That must of been awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've gone fishing for Tuna in Hatters NC and we had a ball. My back still hurts to this day from the 69 pound Wahoo I caught.
The great thing about Hatters is that a soon as you catch your tuna, you can take to the nearest restaurant and they will gladly cook it for you and style.

I went to Miami for Sailfish, but was unsuccessful. I want to go back so I too can get some cool pictures like you did.

You look a little pale Mike :FIREdevil: Did you get sick on the ride out?

Not the day I caught the sailfish (Saturday) but I did get sick Sunday. Kept reeling right up until I started see "sparklies" in front of my eyes. Time to go lay down when you nearly blackout fishing!

I would have been laying down trying to sleep it off... not still fishing !!!!

What's cool about going out on a boat diving. As soon as you go down.... and breath the wonderfull air off a tank. NO MORE sickness !!!!! I couldn't do what you did Mike... no way ! I get sick in 4 foot waves LOLOL. Thankfully I know I won't feel sick as soon as I'm underwater.

What size boat were you on? It looks small !!! 32 footer? Man... I couldn't do that !!!

Boat is nearly 60' long. I have been out when the seas have been constant 10 footers with some 15 footers mixed in every so often. When you look out the back of the boat it is.....sky, water, sky, water....for about 8 hours. Then when you get back to shore and lay down the whole room starts moving up and down and then when you close your eyes, it starts spinning.

Going out on the Bay tomorrow, it should be a lot easier on the system.
