L180 spawn

I picked up a trio of L180s at this past CatCon and they've finally spawned. I noticed quite a few juvies on the glass today. They don't seem to be going for the pleco wafers I put in for them, so I added some banana leaves as well.

That's great!

But only you would think that something you bought last October should have spawned before June of this year! :)

Matt, I see four reports on there, and I know there are more than that. http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=1404

Of the dark-colored ancistrus, this one is easier to breed than some of the others, that's why I decided to get them.

I'm actually mildly surprised they spawned; I was going to set them up with softer water once the fishroom is done. They were really just in that tank as a future project, but the person I got them from did tell me that they spawned in her tap water all the time.

I must have read it wrong - kudos anyway!

15 gal, my fish room is on the cool side....probably 76 degrees right now? Live plants (Java moss and subwassertang) coconut huts, driftwood and a few pleco caves. Mattenfilter for the filtration. Seems like I'm always behind on waterchanges right now, so it's been about 3 weeks on those tanks. I've also got some pelvicachromis lobe in the tank with them.

So are you able to keep cats and chichlids breeding together in 15's? Thought that plecos and cories were a no no due to egg predation?

I find it totally depends. Sometimes it really works well, sometimes not. I wouldn't do cories, but ancistrus spawns are pretty protected.

I'm surprised this one worked, though, because the Pelvicachromis in this tank seem to prefer the pleco caves over their coconut huts. Also, I've had breeding success come to a complete halt when one fish decides that it wants to use someone else's cave for spawning...everything can be fine for months and then one day it's not. So then you change it up or move fish around.

I think if you provide enough cover and choices it can work (sometimes).

Nice plecos, Chris! I'd like to grab a couple of them from you down the road when they're ready to move out. :)
