Cycle using feeder minnow?

I just set up a 55gal tank for cichlids. Can I buy feeder minnow to cycle my tank and then just add the cichlids to get rid of the minnows? How many minnow should I get? I'm also using filter media from my 75 gallon community tank to help with the cycle. The 55gal is also already planted with 4 bunches of anacharis.

I'd stay away from feeder fish.

Why not just use cichlids?

Used filter media from an active tanks should do the trick just fine. As Matt says, just start with the cichlids. If you're nervous, then start slowly and ramp up.

Just use your cichlids. What kind of fish are going in the tank?

If you search the Internet, there is ammonia free of everything that you can cycle with. Some hardware stores carry it, this is not the stuff in your grocery store
