Anyone Experiencing Water Issues Lately?

I usually do 50% plus weekly water changes for my 90G african tank. Three weeks ago when I did a water change, my fish were gasping for air little bit but nothing serious. I found one dead tropheus next day. A week later, I did another water change and a few hours later everybody was gasping for air and next day, I found my large male red empress and another tropheus dead. Fish still gasping for air. I put an air stone in the water and they seemed to be doing much better. Had to leave for one week vacation that day. Came back and things looked Ok. No casuaties. I did smaller water changes on Saturday and yesterday and things are OK. But my fish don't seem as lively as they did three weeks ago and a few fish are not eating. Just wondering if other are experiencing water issues due to recent heat spell. Not quite sure what's going on.... My other tanks are fine.

You might want to check with your water supplier. Municipalities sometimes change the chemistry and add things and you wouldn't even know it. You might have to condition your water with something else, as there are ones that handle just chlorine, ones that handle both chlorine and chloramines, and ones that handle those plus the heavy metals.

Because I am kinda a nerd ;) I request a water analysis from my town once every quarter. It's amazing how much it changes just from report to report.

I also always let the water that has been sitting n the pipes run off into a container and water plants with it. Meaning, I let the hot water tap run until the water is actually HOT and ditto with the COLD water. I do not want to use the water that has been sitting in the pipes for my fish.

Do you condition your water?

*Sidetrack, you don't by any chance drive a red Jeep?

I use AP's tap water conditioner and Prime. No, I don't drive a red jeep. I drive a silver RX8. ;)

I have a recent water report, but I heard that the water treatment facilities do different things depending on weather other conditions...

Ah, ok. Hm. Have you tested the water out of the tap? What are you water (tank) parameters? Sounds just like low oxygen levels. What's the water's temp? Do you normally use airstones or just rely on the filters to provide the circulation? Any fish "scratching" on rocks, etc?

Oh, I ask because I saw a red jeep in Fair Oaks yesterday and the license plate read, "YSS-2382" (or some kind of other numbers)

Good to know. Next time I see a silver rx-8 I'll be sure to let you know my presence! haha

Actually a few months back a few of us in my area had a similar problem with fish losses after water changes. It only lasted a short time but we all had unexplained die off. Ours was a very nice pair of loricaria that were spawning one day and dead the next after a water change. Now we all did things differently as far as conditioning. We have a treatment system so never add chemicals. I do know that our water sources are in agricultural areas and after a good rain the fertilizers can leach into the water source and raise the nitrate levels.

We never did figure out what caused that but just thought it odd we all experienced the same problem at the same time.

My fish are still not as lively as they were before. My Malawi guys are fine, but tropheus are lethargic. Not eating well. They used to eat like pigs. I am not very hopeful.

Hey, I did notice there seemed to be a stronger than usual (sad that there is a usual) chlorine smell to the tap a few weeks ago. Assuming we are both on Ffx county system. Because of the heat they may have added more chlorine/chloramine (I forget the difference) or switched. Prime treats both though, so that's weird.

I do know from experience that overdosing Prime in warmer water can cause low oxygen symptoms... out of curiosity, why are you dosing with two conditioners at the same time?

Good luck with the trophs...

Well, my tropheus are dying one by one. This sucks ..... They were doing so well up until that one water change messed everything up.
