Ok so this is a tank a given to my girlfriend to put her baby oscar in...who most unfortunately somehow jumped out of his tank :'( (r.i.p. fred) but now i need to do something else with it. And wanted to see if anyone had and good ideas on what and how to change it. Plus something i could put in it. Ive always wanted to do a school of tiger barbs. But now this cichlid fever is really gettin me! So whata yall got for me!?

You could do a pair of any of the cryptoheros species, but that would be about it when it came to breeding. A pair of apistos or rams would also work out, and you do have a schooling fish as well.

You could probably do one of the west african cichlids(Kribs, African Butterfly Cichlids or possibly jewel cichlids) and a school of tiger barbs. There seems to be a pretty broad range of aggressiveness with jewel cichlids, so you might only be able to do a pair of them.

Well i had a pair of jewels and had to give one away so i dont really wana go that route again. And im also really not concerned witu breeeding. Not quite to that level i think of were im willing to try. Yet! But i like the idea of the apistos or the kribs. I think smaller colorfull fish would be nice. How many of each fish do you think i could do. Ive got two 40g filters on it. So thats not an issue.

The thing with apistos and kribs is they have to be spawning or at least courting to display their best colors. I think starting with 6 juvies of either would be the way to go.

Tanganyikan shellies or maybe a pair of small Tang rock-dwellers would work. Many of them will not predate, so would colonize the tank.

Well i have a ten gal i was thinking to do shellies in. They seem like neat little fish. And i like the idea of kribs or apistos. Whats some pros and cons.
