I've seen a fish go from having no symptoms to boating up and gone in as little as an hour. Bloat is one illness I feel like we know very little about. Never seen it on such a large fish, usually 2"-5" but then again I have the most numbers in that size range.

Bloat is a symptom of many different deseases. Freshwater fish is constantly taking in water from osmotic pressure and rid of excess water by urination. If its kidney fails to regulate the osmosic pressure, the fish will bloat up.

This is one school of thought on bloat. Others would say that's the cause of swim bladder disease. A different condition with a different cause but has a similar bloating effect. Others swear its from protien rich diets clogging the fish up, others claim its bacterial and some others say parasitic. I'm not saying any of these are right or wrong. I don't think anyone can answer that. Atleast from the info and experience I have had available to me. Some claim peas cure it right away and surely peas do not reverse kidney failure. On the other hand it normally isn't contageous so bacterial or parasitic explanations don't really work either.

My fish have had alot of meat lately. I keep them on a diverse diet. 5 or days they are on pellets. When I do give them meat I switch off between krill, brine shrimp, beef heart.
