Water conditions

How similar are the water conditions in the 3 main African lakes (Malawi, Victoria, Tanganyika)? ie if I have 2 main tanks, and 4 fry tanks, could I keep all the water conditions the same and still be successful?

I've kept and bred all three in local tap...add some crushed coral or other buffering agent if you like.

In nature, the conditions are different (Lake Vic technically isn't a rift lake) but in the aquarium, it's not really crucial to duplicate them...

Consistency consistency consistency they will do great as long as the water chem is consistent if you change it around add buffers remove buffers add chems like ph up or down etc it would hurt rather than benefit them just keep it constant.

I would start with trying them in dechlorinated tap water. If you are having issues then I might try adding buffers. I you are starting with tank raised fish they should adapt to most conditions.
