Surface skimmer?

Does anyone use one and are they worth the money?I only have an Emporer400 with 2 circulation pumps that I only turn on to circulate that poop that settles and to agitate the surface for a while. The current is too strong to leave on all day. There is a film of gunk that forms at the surface. Is there any other way to get rid of this?

I use a surface skimmer on a canister and find it works pretty well. It certainly clears up the funk on the surface but it can be a little finicky to keep going.

I used to use one of these. It worked alright.
