Sumps in freshwater applications

I had a sump when I ran a small saltwater aquarium. I kept a protein skimmer, heater, and return pump. I know some who incorporated calcium and phosphate reactors as well.

How do freshwater tank keepers use their sumps. Can a protein skimmer be used in a freshwater setup? Are there other specialized pieces of equipment that can go in the sump?

Protein skimmers do not work in freshwater, they won't generate bubbles.

Usually the focus of a freshwater sump is focused on biological filtration.

You can incorporate a decent bio-filter in a sump since those are frowned upon with salt.

Have always used a overflow-to-sump filter on my main cichlid tank. Extra medium for bio filtration and it clears the surface film.

went with airstone and return water from 2" below waterline where ever possible. I *hate* watching flake going right to my filter.
