Sand or Water: Who goes first

Hi All,

Which would be the better method to fill tank. Should I put the water first and then sand or the other way?

I always put the sand in first and rinse it a bit. In a large tank, that might mean filling half way then draining a few times. To decrease clouding in your tank, put a clean plate face down on top of the sand and direct the flow of water onto the plate while filling the tank.

Whatever you do, let it settle before you start your filters.

Sand first. The best bet is to rinse the sand outside the tank. Then when the rinse water is running clear, add it to the tank. Then add water.

You can direct the water against a plate or the aquarium glass to minimize the disturbance to the sand.
