He also took over for Ozzie as lead singer of Sabbath in 1979 for a minute.

Most importantly, he popularized this gesture in metal... folks didn't do that before he came along.

If it weren't for this guy, there could have very well never been Beavis and Butthead. ;)

The world would be a much different place........

YOU GUYS ARE TO YOUNG. Ronnie James Dio was the singer for Richie Blackmore's Rainbow." Richie Blackmore was the lead guitar player for Deep Purple." Then Dio went on his own.
RJD was then the lead singer for Black Sabbath. from 1979 till.
He will be missed as a great rock vocalist.

I got to see him a few times in teh 80's and he always put on a great show. He was one of the few that could pull of live everynight what he did in the studio. He also created the Hear 'n Aid project for famine relief, the metal version of We are the world. He said that hand gesture came from his Italian grandmother, some move to ward off curses or put them on people, I can't remember.

I thought that was Gene Simmons who made the sign of horns popular...
And lol at replacing Ozzy. That's like dividing by zero.

I believe the hand gesture used by his Grandmother was to ward off evil spirits if I remember correctly and he was responsible for all of us doing it... definitely wasn't Gene Simmons.

Dio and Gene Simmons hated each other and I think it was over Gene claiming he came up with that sign. There was a lot of lost love between him and Ozzy in the 80's. Ozzy use to have a dwarf dressed like Dio serve him water on stage. A friend just sent me this high school pic, I love the quote. It's funny to think of Ronnie James as class pres and Dance Band orchestra :pound:if they only knew.

I prefer the Ozzy era overall but it was Live Evil that introduced me to Sabbath. I was listening to this song on Sunday morning, for all I know while he was passing, maybe iTunes shuffle knew somehting I didn't. Everytime I see or hear anything about Dio now I hear the OH OH OHHH at 5:07

I remember it having something to do with "the evil eye". Maybe that's how she countered the evil eye. Anyone ever hear any of his southern rock stuff? I think they did some flowerpower stuff too.

Yup, something along those lines.

I just saw "Sonishphere 2009" a couple weeks ago and he was there with Heaven and Hell (Sabbath members). I had recorded it to the DVR but deleted it after watching it... kinda wish I hadn't now. Wouldn't mind watching it again.

Ahh Man, I like that track Danger! And the second one with Elf Pic is a nice mellow track too. Dio was very influential in his time, but that pic of him with that smirk is Priceless. RIP brother Dio...
