Thanks for your generosity, Matt!

Until a couple of members were breeding these, they weren't around the club or the area. If you're looking for a attractive, relatively peaceful New World cichlid, give them a try!

Hey Matt I would gladly take six, got a planted forty breeder looking for some new inhabitants

Just so you guys know -- this is a pairing fish. The three biggest are likely to be all boys. Not sure how they'd all get along. Depends on size of the tank, I suppose. And two pairs MIGHT be able to work in a 40 breeder for awhile. After some time, though, I had to pull my second pair in the 40 as they didn't get enough room once the dominant pair were escorting a swarm of fry all over. And I had that tank very heavily planted!

Hi Matt,

They are one of my favorites. I'll be at the meeting and will take 6. Any pairs and offspring that result I will give back to CCA as I just like having them around to watch them interact. They are breeding machines once a pair is bonded.

Thanks,
Shawn Carlson

I got a small pair from Aquamania from Turfboss and they started to spawn in a month! They at the first spawn, But I am hoping to move them to a 30 gallon outdoors and remove the Adults once I see new fry.

I got my fish from Holly and she knows of what she speaks.

Holly, your 40 isn't a breeder, is it? A breeder has a pretty big footprint. I think two pairs of adults would be okay in that.

Lol, that's your experience with them. I have had 4 pairs in a 55gallon and they were fine, it's all about the personality of the fish, tank size, and tank setup.

The adults won't eat the fry, at least in my experience.

Mine always did. It was Dad that developed the taste for fry....I watched him one day as he diligently tended the newly free-swimming babies. He'd pick up the stragglers and spit them back into the group...except that every third or fourth one wasn't spit back out.

I think with only a few exceptions ALL the rainbow cichlids in this club came from me. Matt, Jon, Tony, turfboss, Jesse, etc. So, yeah, a lot of experience!

Yes, I had a 40 breeder and I felt two pairs did not thrive in it. They survived in that no one was killed, but the subdom pair was pretty miserable, getting pushed into the corner even when I "gave" each pair a lovely little den of their own.

As far as eating fry or no, most of my pairs were very good parents. But I also have some weirdness. One pair apparently didn't really lke each other very much and in one case they split the fry and each guarded them in different ends of the tank. In another case, the mom took the fry away from the dad entirely, who did snatch them whenever he could. In other cases, both parents were exemplary parents, even guarding them when the "swarm" got fairly small, at which time most parents will abandon them.

I also had males switch partners, so the bonded for life thing ain't true.

Just passing on my personal experience.

Is that right?

And just how many fry did you get that survived to adulthood from that arrangement?

I think Matt may bring me some - will check.

Do you want one of your male Bettas back? Reading up on these guys it seems like they are a little more prone to spawn and successfully hold the eggs when there's rivalry. Pretty sure the eggs from last week got swallowed around day 3, but it was cool that they spawned so quickly. They go in the whiskey barrel tonight or tomorrow.

Mine have also not successfully raised a batch, either...I end up with him swallowing the eggs on the dreaded "day 3" also.

If that's what the pros say I suppose so. Yes please.
