I've heard that they've been bred in Asia with hormone injections. Also maybe bred in big ponds in Asia. I seem to recall an old school TFH book on fish breeding had pictures. It was a multi-volume one, if anyone recalls.
It's amazing how many fish are "wild caught" and still only manage to cost a few cents (wholesale) or a couple of dollars retail: cardinal and other tetras, a lot of cories, etc.
Capitol Aquarium in Sacramento has some in their 1,000g tank that are over 30 years old. Some are close to a foot long while others were somewhat smaller. They also have some Hemisynodontis and a couple of other fish that old. They had a gourami that was, I think, over 40 when he died.
