Hati Introduction
Hati is the story of my father’s life and how WWII would forever change it. He lived through a very challenging time in history. Born during the boom of the 1920s, life was simple. Things rapidly take a turn for the worse in 1929. The depression grips the United States and the world. Eventually, it leads to a world war in which Hati will unwillingly become a major part. Major changes come about through innovation and the war. Life is no longer so simple. Mysteries occur, some take years to solve, and others are not solved, even today. Hati’s service with the 285th F.A.O.B. changes him dramatically. That experience dramatically affects the remainder of his lifetime. The world changed in a flash at the end of WWII. The world remains unsettled. More wars occur. The Cold war begins. So does the race to space. Medical advances help many. However, they are not able to help Hati. Many of the changes during Hati’s lifetime still affect the world today.

Most of this book is based on fact. Some things are based on educated guesses and speculation of what Hati most likely would have said or done. A gripping story of one man’s struggle. A struggle, only a few ever really knew.
Until 2015, when Master Sergeant Walt Cross published his book “Flash-Bang” The Unit History of the 285th Field Artillery (Observation) Battalion, I did not know the full extent of my father’s service in WWII. His time in the service forever changed our family’s life. As you read this book, you will find out why.
