Hard vs soft water for hard water species

I usually amend water to suit the species, but have been thinking about when I fall behind in maintenance and how soft water might be safer re: ammonia(?) being less toxic.

But then I just researched to see if it was ammonia or nitrates or nitrites that gets more toxic in hard water, but there’s papers on these chemicals decreasing in hard water.

Ex. https://epapers.uwsp.edu/thesis/1995/johnsonC.pdf

So which one is it?

Also, is there any research on using soft water on hard water species- and how it affects them long term?
