API cichlid buffer overdose possible????

So I saw two of the fish in my 55 scratching today so I tested the water. The chemicals were fine. The ph tested at @7.4 (light rust on the API kit). So. Added 5 scoops of the API child buffer. Problem is I later read the package and it said only add the amount based on he amount needed to raise. So, can you overdose? I have mbuna in the tank. What happens if the ph gets too high?

Depends on the active ingrediant in the buffer. Test your water again, see where it is at. You are aiming for about 7.8

Yes you can go too high...

Buffers can only raise (or lower) ph by so much, they are chemical compounds that react to keep ph in a range. So it is unlikely that it will raise the ph too much.

The danger is that you will have added enough of whatever is in it that the chemicals will make the water not good.
