    Combining Mbunas

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Sonny Disposition @ Nov 19 2008, 11:00 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div> I see someone already recommended passing on the Julidochromis. There are a number of arguments against mixing fish from different areas. Much of it has to do with water parameters, the rest of...

    Sand Or Gravel?

I picked mine up from the local aquarium shop. I do prefer the black sand however. You may want to try someplace that sells sand blasting equipment to see if you can find the black silica. Tim

    Sand Or Gravel?

A growing trend in the hobby is to keep bare bottom tanks. It makes cleanup easier. ;) I prefer sand in my tanks and use silica sand quite frequently. It's a heavier sand and is pretty much dust free. When using any type of sand with your fish, be careful that it's not too deep. With fish that...

    N. Brichardi Now N. Pulcher

    N. pulcher has a large distribution in the southern end of the lake. The "daffodil" variant of N. pulcher is found in the Kasanga area. Usually collected at Kambwimba and Kantalaba. The N. pulcher found north and south of the Kasanga area has little to no yellow on it. Prior to this...

    Another Malawi Question

You'll find color in both males and females in any of the Mbuna species. Sometimes they have the same coloration, sometimes different colors, but both have color. In the Peacocks, Utaka and Haps, the females are brown or silver. For Mbuna species, check out some of the Cynotilapia species...

    Cross Species Breeding

You could try it and see how it goes I suppose. Labeotropheus are pretty strict algae grazers and get very territorial as they grow. In a 40 breeder, I would think either the M. hayjomaylandi or the Labeotropheus would become dominant and systematically kill off the other species in the tank. Tim

    Draft Malawi Tank

If you're using the L. caeruleus as a base, you have a lot of ways you can go with the tank. L. caeruleus is an insectivorous fish so it's not limited to the straight vegetarian diets like many of the other Mbuna. You could mix them with the A. stuartgranti that Mike has or you could go the M...

    Cross Species Breeding

Nothing you listed should hybridize provided the tank is large enough. In smaller tanks, any dominant male can become hyperdominant. That's where they view the entire tank as their space and they'll breed with anything. In a 75 gallon tank or larger, there's little chance of those species cross...

    Grow Out Questions

Adding a few shells, IMO will lead to fighting over said shells. Especially with fifty fish and not enough to go around. To pair off fish, if you want to pass them on to others in established pairs, many people set them up in groups of six. I prefer to sell fish that pair off in groups rather...

    Nimbochromis Venustus

IMHO, I wouldn't keep any Nimbochromis species with Mbuna. Nimbochromis should be fed a high protein diet for them to show their best colors and to grow properly. If you introduce females and want them to breed, a good diet is important. A well rounded mix of live foods, like worms, brine shrimp...

    Labidochromis Colony Mates

Bob, L caeruleus is a pretty versatile fish depending on the tank size. They can co-exist with most Mbuna and being insectivorous, they can co-exist with many of the Haps, Utaka and Peacocks as well. What tank size were you shooting for? Were you looking for both female and male species to...

    Blastid Transformers!

I deal with broken transformers all the time. Then again, I operate the Transmission system for Connecticut and Western Mass. What I hated was, to the everyday person, everything was a transformer. When I worked in Distribution dispatch, anytime a fuse blew on a circuit, someone...
