Please explain teh Gold Ratio to me.

Using the Golden Ratio on a tank: http://gwapa.org/wordpress/2008/01/january-2008-meeting/ Yes, you find a focal point, at about a third point. You try and create a flow - a natural line for the eye to follow - to that point. There are little tricks involved in terms of angling materials...

Dithers for Apistos - and a food source from the babies. Anything bigger than medium apistos, and the adults are food, too.

Which Filter Would You Buy, and Why?

Ask Diana about Fluvals Rich. :) I'm a fan of Eheims when I can afford them, and Renas when I can't. Want to try the Marinelands. I know way too many people that know how to "repair" and replace parts on Fluvals for me to actually buy one to be honest. Scared me off of them before trying...

    low nitrate level

In a typical water column dosing tank, you'd want to keep them over 10ppm, and usually under 30ppm. It all depends on lighting, how fast the engine goes - really high light tanks can mow through nitrates, while low light tanks typically get what they need from fish mulm. Slowly ramp up...

    low nitrate level

I'm always zeroed out on nitrates in the water column, but that is with mineralized soil, different system. In a more traidtional planted tank, no, you don't want to zero out nitrates. Why? Here's a simple reason - you need three basic things for plants to grow. Carbon source (Co2), light...

It is a drooler of a saltwater or planted tank though.

    75g RR, wet/dry and stand

You don't have to use the sump. Just plumb the inlet and outlet of a canister filter to it, and bang zoom, closed loop and no wet floors. ;)

    Plants are dying......

It is generally the magnetic ballasts they were using - PC's smoked out, too, in a literal sense. New Compact and T5's are all Electonic Ballast now I think from them... so now they typically just die instead. ;) There is a GWAPA member who went through multiple fixtures in under 2 years' time...

    Plants are dying......

It is the height of the tank. Things get.... interesting.... after 24" of depth. You'll need to push more light. Here's why. Plants need two colors of light to grow. One red band, one blue band. Red light fades quickly in water depths - ever wonder why saltwater lights are blue? Because all...

saved a tankful of fish last night

The chart is also a faulty method overall, as PH is affected by ANY acid, and not just CO2. This means tannic acid leeching from wood, anything, it alters readings. It is an okay baseline, but if you want to be dead on accurate... drop checker. I'm not a fan of probes because of the cost/value...

    Multies with shell for sale

I set a 10g planted with pool filter sand the other day. Am I right in assuming that 1 1/2 - 2" deep substrate is deep enough for them? Figured I'd better actually have one of these little planted cichlid tanks I'm saying y'all can do, lol. Looking forward to it!

Hey guys. We were trying to set up a swap on Thursday, but the times aren't working out. Michael's kind offer may be the best plan here. I'll pm you my cell Michael, can meet you at 70/27 Friday...

CO2 can't crash KH, only PH. Well, technically, yes, it is theoretically possible. Put it this way - even at 500ppm of CO2, you still cannot affect KH by a single degree of your readings (I think it is roughly 1000 ppm to affect it if I remember it right). The amount needed is ludicrous in...

saved a tankful of fish last night

It isn't the CO2 affecting KH..... how to say... KH is not affected by CO2. CO2 is not a strong enough acid to break down KH readings. Something else is going on in that tank. Something sucked up the KH, which in turn eliminated the buffer for the CO2. PH suddenly then plummets without the...

    Seachem Purigen

I use it freshwater. My tanks run lean, I used it to clear a mysterious heavy metal that was ravaging inverts in the tank. It cleared whatever it was, and is still charged in the filter several months later - plants eat my nitrates and phosphates, so it won't get much of a chance to get at those. ;)

    Seachem Purigen

I use it on one tank, and yes would recommend it. It also does a good job pulling otherwise hard to clear items, like copper, from water....which is what I used it for.

Near Frederick, boonies for most folks - Mt Airy. No saltwater here. ;) It is a shrimp tank with moss right now, can toss them in another tank easily enough. I was just speaking floor size - the cube is okay territory wise, yes?

Tell you what, I'll take ten - getting sand this weekend, tank set Sunday. I don't want to overload it off the bat, I'm not used ot big water changes and such, wanna ease into this. ;) I'm guessing they'll come with some shells? Could pick up/meet you sometime Sunday if that'd work. I can...
