    Manacapuru Angles

My understanding is there's more than one population in the Manacapuru river and not all have the red color, meaning they can legitimately come from Manacapuru, but not have the 'red back.' It's similar with Peru scalare, not all have the red spotting. I've also been looking for red back...

Are green phantoms a fragile fish

I generally agree with JLW, particularly about diet. I've kept more than one of each of the three, Hemiancistrus L200 and L128 and Baryancistrus L200. None were especially shy, with the Baryancistrus being the most continuously active. All are nice fish and all have done well for me with pH 7.4...

    LF rotkeil severum

https://www.tangledupincichlids.com/ https://www.wetspottropicalfish.com/current-stock/ Some lfs also have them, but some of these are not as reliable in terms of having pure rotkeil. At small sizes, (except that they should normally have 8 bars instead of 9) they can look like common greens...

    Wayne Leibel

Some of you have probably seen this other places by now, but if not- Dr. Wayne Leibel has passed. If you have some time in the hobby you likely know him as one of the true gentlemen, true experts, and one of the finest educators in the hobby...

    TUIC 2.0

I'm a few hours from DC, lived outside of Boston for 5 years, Florida for 5, Colorado for ten, and grew up in Chicago. I'm rarely in DC, most often on my way somewhere else. For me DC is "there", unless encompassed within "here" as part of the mid-Atlantic or here in the states. The "there"...

There's not one single source. Jeff Rapps imported Guianacara over the years-- not always on his list but he had them occasionally. The ones I had, probably 8 years ago, came from a guy in Ohio who bought his wild breeders from Jeff, supposed to be sphenozona, not especially colorful. I watched...

Red spotted, which is nice. I've wondered why we don't often get the nicer Guianacara here. Maybe characins are coming in the future?

Heros efasciatus true pair + Hoplarchus psittacus

Tempting here also, but I have logistical obstacles. Do you recall the location Jeff imported them from? Water conditions you're keeping them in?

Questions on how environment affects male peacocks, along with some other general questions about peacocks.

If it would have been picked on and harassed constantly by a more aggressive male, then yes. Significantly so vs. being seriously bullied or even killed off by a really mean rival. Otherwise, not much difference imo, unless maybe it stressed him being in a tank by himself. When I'd get two males...

Questions on how environment affects male peacocks, along with some other general questions about peacocks.

    1. Yes 2. Not necessarily. Lifespan depends more on water quality, food quality, stresses, genetics. 3. Depends somewhat on individual fish and its color vs. background colors. But-- color is affected by water conditions and quality and nutrition as much as anything. Lighting is also a factor...

Smithsonian Magazine on evolution in Lake Malawi

Been wanting to read it for a while, finally did this winter. A great primer on string theory, problems with string theory typically not mentioned in popular media, and questions theoretical physics have been trying to figure out. I thought I had a grasp on the basics of string theory, but I...

Smithsonian Magazine on evolution in Lake Malawi

Yes, interesting field. Current science is passing Darwin by in certain ways, which shouldn't be surprising considering the advancements since his time. In physics this wouldn't be such a problem, but people hold a reverence for Darwin. The field has been one of contention and debate for years...

Smithsonian Magazine on evolution in Lake Malawi

Yes, fascinating subject. I've been reading (and writing) on this for some time-- in a larger context of genetics, adaptation, etc. Small sample of the information out there: https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/abs/10.1098/rspb.1990.0052 And...

FS: A group of Mpimbwe (or Burundi)

+1 Burundi color also. Mpimbwe have more metallic blue, occasionally purplish,. When some Burundi get a big hump you get a bit of variation in the black on the hump, so this may resemble a Mpimbwe hump somewhat to an eye that doesn't know Mpimbwe well. I note an angelfish in one of the photos...

Does growing out really pay off?

As a one shot deal? I wouldn't consider it a reliable business model in many cases. There are a few ways it can (but may not always) work. Breed a currently hot fish yourself and hope it's still hot by the time you're ready to sell, or that by then everyone else with the same idea doesn't...

Your Bucket List - Aulonocara and Haplochromis (all male tanks)

Just haps and peacocks (as in your title) or are you considering Tanganyika cichlids also? Sure, with some of the more esoteric Tangs, the market is limited, but Malawi haps and peacocks not so much-- I did them for years, breeding, trade, sell-- with the exception that the really large Malawi...

    Haplochromis / Haplochromide?

People don't normally refer to Tanganyikan cichlids as haps, partly because of their distinctiveness from cichlids in the other lakes and partly because it's been a long time since most Tanganyikan cichlids were ever thought to be related closely to cichlids in the other lakes (there are just a...
