Yes, but I still recommend the sponge prefilter covering the intake. It is a lot easier to rinse that filter in a bucket of water every couple of weeks than to open and clean the canister filter. The time between opening the canister filter to do maintenance will be extended quite a bit ;)

Dr. Loiselle is an excellent speaker and very passionate about tropical fish. I attended several sessions he gave on conservation and preservation of species back in May at the Canadian Association of Aquarium Clubs annual convention. Well worth the time :)

Very good advice, I have my filter intake about 10cm ( 4 inches ) above the substrate with no issues for the impeller A sponge pre-filter covering the intake is a good idea as well, I have done that in many of my tanks :)

I highly recommend getting Ted in as a speaker. I enjoyed two presentations he did at a neighbouring club back in November. He is a great speaker and his photos are excellent, especially his collecting trips :)

The Powershot SX40 should give you some pretty good results. There has to be enough light on the aquarium for the auto-focus to work, otherwise you will have to focus manually. Bring some lighting from another aquarium and place it on top of the tank you are photographing. If you have it on...

My Petricola/Lucipinnis seem to be egg scatterers. The eggs get drawn through the canister filter intake for my XP2. I find the fry thriving in the bottom of the filter when I clean it ;)
