How did you get into the hobby

In grade 7 the science room had two aquariums. One was a community with livebearers, tetras, plants and Kuhli loaches ! The other was a larger aquarium with a Jack Dempsey, a Tinfoil Barb, a Pink Convict and a huge sailfin pleco. I was hooked ... bugged my parents for an aquarium, but no way...

    Geophegus Altifrons

What is this HOT you refer to ? Is that an acronym for a local shop ? I am not local so I have no clue ?

    Geophegus Altifrons

Yes, but I still recommend the sponge prefilter covering the intake. It is a lot easier to rinse that filter in a bucket of water every couple of weeks than to open and clean the canister filter. The time between opening the canister filter to do maintenance will be extended quite a bit ;)

Dr. Paul Loiselle at PVAS (Sat, Aug 2 at 1:00 PM)

Dr. Loiselle is an excellent speaker and very passionate about tropical fish. I attended several sessions he gave on conservation and preservation of species back in May at the Canadian Association of Aquarium Clubs annual convention. Well worth the time :)

Very good advice, I have my filter intake about 10cm ( 4 inches ) above the substrate with no issues for the impeller A sponge pre-filter covering the intake is a good idea as well, I have done that in many of my tanks :)

    Fetivums

Festivums are one of my favourite South American cichlids. I have a pair in my 100 gallon community tank with Severums, Rainbows and tetras. I am growing up 6 more in a 50 gallon community tank with livebearers, tetras, corys. They are a very nice addition to any community tank :) Here...

    Favorite SA/CA Cichlid

I like groups of geophagus for the lower regions of the aquarium, and Severums and Festivums for the upper regions. Must have sand for the geophagus. Like most South Americans, these species are usually way less aggressive that most Central Americans ;) Avoid the Red Hump Geophagus, they can be...

what does everyone do for a living?

I have been working in IT since the late 1970's ... yeah, punched cards, banks of tape reel drives and huge room filling mainframes ... I am currently working on UNIX server systems as an Oracle DBA for an Automobile and Property Insurer ... by the way, I have been on the Internet since 1994 :)

Favorite AquaMania Experiences...and Pics if you've got them!

I did not attend your first AquaMania, but I do have some insights into attending a fish convention. I have attended a few of the Extravaganza weekends put on by the Ohio Cichlid Association, as well as several put on by the Canadian Association of Aquarium Clubs. I have also attended many...

Shipping Fish 101 from Ted Judy

I highly recommend getting Ted in as a speaker. I enjoyed two presentations he did at a neighbouring club back in November. He is a great speaker and his photos are excellent, especially his collecting trips :)

Help me with photography, I suck

The Powershot SX40 should give you some pretty good results. There has to be enough light on the aquarium for the auto-focus to work, otherwise you will have to focus manually. Bring some lighting from another aquarium and place it on top of the tank you are photographing. If you have it on...

Tell Us About Your Craziest Tank Moves

Common theme seems to be large tanks and stairs ;) I helped a friend pick up a tank he bought sight unseen from someone who was getting out of the hobby. It was a 6 foot thick glass no brace tank. The person selling it was living on the top floor of an old Victorian house that had been...

    Synodontis Petricola

My Petricola/Lucipinnis seem to be egg scatterers. The eggs get drawn through the canister filter intake for my XP2. I find the fry thriving in the bottom of the filter when I clean it ;)
