    Constructing a styrofoam-based aquarium background

Not so much as they can only do it once ;-) Tony, I do not believe any of these spp will cross and not all will be spawning pairs/groups as there is no way I could get fry out of the tank. It is a six footer. -Shane

Help! Bad impeller on aquarium filter?

The rubber does not "wear" as much as it hardens over time. Once hard it does not seat correctly. They ast about 5-7 years. Longer in softwater than hard water. I have no understanding why but it is true.

    Constructing a styrofoam-based aquarium background

Those lights are available at Home Depot for $40 each and come with a built in dimmer switch and ready to plug in. I really like them and am using them on several tanks. The only drawback is that, especially if turned up high, they can get hot as they use 50 watt MR 16 halogen bulbs. I would...

    Constructing a styrofoam-based aquarium background

There are dozens of online articles about constructing a background with Quikrete. It seems like a lot of work to me for the results one gets. It will also leech and raise the pH. Not a big issue for hard water fishes, but certainly one for soft water fishes. -Shane...

    Constructing a styrofoam-based aquarium background

No, I have not. If you do please let me know how it works. I do not know, but I suspect a very long time. Look at this guy's South American tank with a very similar background. It has been up for a while. Even if you have no desire to build a background look at this tank. It is very...

    Constructing a styrofoam-based aquarium background

Based on this thread. http://www.capitalcichlids.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13639 A step by step guide: Step 1) Cut styrofoam sheets to size. A tight fit side to side is important, but do not sweat the height too much as substrate will hide the bottom. Optional steps if making a layered...

While I really like the idea of a meeting where we make something, I have to agree that it would be a bit much. Construction is a minimum of two full days and three is much better. The base primer has to cure for several hours (best overnight) before adding the epoxy. Then the epoxy has to...

WTB - Stand and Hood for 40 Breeder

Same here. You could always use half the stand (it comes in two parts) for a single 40 breeder. -Shane

Help! Bad impeller on aquarium filter?

The impellers do not go "bad" as much as the rubber on the ends becomes old and no longer hold the impeller tight. This causes the rattling sound and loss of suction power. You'll need a new impeller. -Shane

    Pleco

I would not try this as the two fishes need very different care conditions. Chaetostoma need cool (68-74F), well oxygenated water with a very high turnover rate. Microgeophagus need warm (80-82F) still water, preferably with lots of plants. Alongside Microgeophagus we collect lots of...

24 hours as everything needs to seal. Then it is attached with silicone to the (inside) back pane of glass and allowed to seal another 24 hours. If there is enough interest I might make a few sized for a standardized 10 gallon or 20 long and see if they sell at the auction. -Shane

    Everyone ok?

Everyone else have lots of stuff spawning now? Nothing like a power outage "dry season." Look close for the fry below the male. -Shane

Background construction. 1) Foam cut to tank size 2) Burned to take off edges. I also walked across it on my hands and knees several times to add more "texture." 3) Primed 4) Sand added 5) Final coat -Shane
