All the leaves may be brown, but...

We love leaves. Specifically, leaves of the Indian Almond Tree, Terminalia catappa. Of course, we figured that you kind of know that already. These trees are found throughout the world, specifically in tropical locales, such as Asia, Africa, and Australia. Well, not all Catappa leaves are the...

What are the REAL benefits of Catappa leaves?

I sound like a "broken record" (wow, that's a really outdated expression, huh?), blabbing on and on daily about the virtues of Catappa leaves, wood, and aquatic botanicals. I really get excited about leaves! Specifically, Catappa leaves! Catappa leaves have been used by fish geeks for a...

Coccoloba uvifera leaves in an aquarium?

I'm in St. Petersburg, where they are ubiquitous. I see a few reports of their use in aquaria, but they are mostly used in vivaria, with frogs. Anyone ever try them?

    Leaves in the tank, anyone?

Interesting study about forest debris in lakes contributing to food chains and helping fish diets. It's on Canadian lakes, so not directly relevant for the fish we keep, but interesting nonetheless. http://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/forest-loss-starves-fish Matt

    Banana Leaves

I was pondering the use of Indian almond and oak leaves, and saw a reference or two to using banana leaves. Was wondering if anybody here had ever tried using them. Also did a search on eBay, and found a few sellers, including one that was quite cheap, and included this fascinating, if hard...

    Adding leaves

Last week I collected some fallen leaves to add to my tanks. Many are not brown yet. Is there a reason to wait until they brown before adding them?

    Indian Almond Leaves -- Belize

Turns out that in addition to great scuba and snorkeling, Belize has lots and lots of Indian Almond Trees (Terminalia Catappa). Wish I could get a whole bunch of leaves in through Customs, but I know better.

    Magnolia Leaves in the Aquarium?

This morning on my way to the bus stop I noticed that a neighbor has a magnolia tree that is losing leaves in the regular course. The leaves are brown and firm, and somewhat resemble Indian almond leaves. I've done a little research using search engines and discovered that the general...

    White spots on anubias leaves

I just got some anubias plants and some of the leaves have something on them I've never seen. They have white "flakes" on them that look as if you scattered white fish food flakes over them and some fell onto the leaves. It doesn't rub off. It's not hair algae or fuzzy in any way. I tried...
