I really need to catch brichardi fry and juvies out of my tanks. Don't want to move things around in the tank. Any good DIY ideas? I was thinking may be using a small plastic water bottle with food inside. Would that work?
You can cut off the top part of a clear bottle and invert it inside the bottle so it makes a seal again. That way the fish get funneled in but can't easily escape. If you lay the bottle along an edge, or rockwork, or something that helps them swim in that direction anyway, then your chances go up. I usually help corral them toward the bottle entrance with nets and such.
It might work. Smaller adults may get in it, too, however. When I've tried this technique, I've found fish like corydoras and apistos in the bottle, quite annoyingly.
I use this technique to pull fry from the Guianacara tank pretty frequently. It works well, so long as you don't have too many small bottom feeders in there. I like to use a chunk of New Era grazer as bait because it's slow dissolving.
I have used this technique in the past with really good results. I drilled a hole in the bottle cap that was slightly larger than the fish I wanted to catch, and then loaded the bottle with baby brine shrimp as bait.
When the lights are off and it is really dark, the fish go to the bottom of the tank and are easy to catch. It takes about an hour of really dark night to get them in this state. You can get up say at 2 AM and catch them. Use a flash light with just enough light to see where the net is.
Since I have over 100 tiny fish I'm trying to catch and minimizing moving rocks around, I will need to try using a trap first and see how that goes. If that doesn't work, I will need to remove the rocks and catch them myself. Anyone want free Brichardis?
