My only question is: Is there any advantage to a group buy (for shipping costs)?

Let's say that 6-7 people ordered, say, 15-20 pieces of wood. Would shipping costs be any less than if done independently? I honestly don't know.

There's a FedEx pick-up office in Rockville (and I'm sure others in metro DC).

I'm guessing you mean we can't have all of our orders shipped to one place. If that's the case, everyone should go ahead and order their wood. Order two and get one free; especially before someone else gets the piece you covet.
