Participants Needed for Driving Safety Study — Receive $75

Westat's Transportation and Safety Research Group is seeking participants for a federally funded research study on drivers' ability to detect and recognize sounds and voice messages in different driving conditions. Westat employees are not eligible, but friends and family may participate.

Participants will take part in a 90-minute session at Westat. They will wear headphones to listen to background sound recorded in a moving vehicle. They will hear sounds and messages while doing a simulated driving task and will answer questions about them. Participants will receive $75.

Sessions will take place on weekday mornings and afternoons.

To be eligible to participate, individuals must
•Have had a valid U.S. driver's license for at least 2 years and no major driving violations in the past few years
•Drive a car on a regular basis
•Be between 21 and 50 years old
•Have normal hearing — hearing aid users or those with functional hearing loss are not eligible
•NOT have participated in previous phases of this research conducted on road in August/September 2013 or in an office in April 2014.

If you are interested in participating or would like to learn more about this study, please contact Diane Snow(dianesnow@westat.com) (301-610-5129).

Volunteers Needed to Test Study Questions and Perform Everyday Activities — Receive $75

The National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS) seeks volunteers for an interviewer training. NHATS is a national study of the ways daily life changes as we age. The training will be held on Saturday, August 2, at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bethesda. There will be two sessions: 8:30-10:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Potential volunteers must complete a telephone questionnaire to determine their eligibility.

Volunteers must be 65 or older and able to stand, get up from a chair, and walk without assistive devices such as a cane or walker. Compensation for participation is $75. While Westat employees are not eligible, friends and relatives of employees may participate. If interested, please leave a voicemail at 1-888-963-5578 specifying that you are calling about NHATS training and providing your name, telephone number, and optimal contact time.

Also, everyone always asks me questions about these things - I do not personally work on either of these studies so I don't know any details, etc., but $75 for a few hours of your time if you've got nothing better to do is not bad - plus, you won't be too far from Congressional when you're done!
