CARES pleco project

Hi everyone,

A little background: I am going to be part of the International Baccalaureate program at BCC high school during my junior and senior years. It puts a high focus on writing and analysis rather than simply knowing facts. During this program we are required to write a 4,000 word research paper on a topic that we are passionate about. Thus I have chosen fish.

I have decided to my paper on breeding CARES fish, primarily plecos. I would like to attempt to breed one or two types of CARES plecos and perhaps a smaller CARES live bearer to take up the upper levels of the tanks.

My budget is fairly open, however I am limited space wise. I have an approximately 4ftx2ft space open for use. However, I could find a little more space if necessary.

If I do get any to breed I plan on donating the majority of their offspring to CCA and other clubs.

I am going to contact the CARES coordinator regarding where to find the fish, but if anyone knows where to find any of them it would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any ideas on which fish I should try or what setup I should use I would love to hear them.

Thank you in advance for all the help,

Lucas

Lucas:

I'm having a hard time reading the list (it get's out of focus if I zoom in), but L066 and L333 are probably your best bet from the ones I can read. I believe they have already been bred in captivity and are relatively available in the hobby. In order to get any results before you graduate, you'll have to try and find a supplier with adult species. Any fish you acquire from breeders would likely be years away from spawning age, based on my brief experience with trying to breed fancy plecos (I had L-066s that I lost during a power outage after growing them out for 18 months).

Any of the larger species (panaque, pseudoancithicus, scobioancistris) take years to mature and adults would probably cost in the thousands of dollars to obtain.

If you could get a better copy of the list, that might help. Ancistrus are typically easier to breed, but I can't tell if there are any on the list.

The Wet Spot has both L066 and L333 on their list today.

L333 is def a nice fish. I had some for a while but did not dedicate the time or space that they needed. I believe I ended up giving them away. They would be my choice also.

I would love to see someone breed l255s, they are defenitely my favorite ancistrus sp.
As for a small livebearer, I'd go with zoogoneticus tequila. Each female only has 1-6 babies every month or so but thy are fun little fish
Good luck!

I have a group of Red-Tailed Goodied juvies:
http://www.borstein.info/profiles/non_cichlid/xenotocaeisen.html

These guys definitely are fin nippers - made the mistake of putting them in with guppies.

If you go beyond catfish and livebearers, I have a couple CARES cichlids that have been breeding in 20 long/29 gallon tanks.

I have a pair of Crypto nanoluteus.
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=131

Also I have a group of Paralabidochromis chromogynos that are breeding in a 29.

Let me know if you are interested in any of these. I would like to hold on to the adult P. chromogynos - but their fry are decent size.

I have realized that though this would have been fun and a good way to get more tanks it was more catering to the MTS side of me than my "I want to get into a good college" side of me . I am going to go with a fuller topic such as genetics.

Thanks for the help anyways.
