I'm setting up a small 5g hex, and was wondering what some interesting fish or inverts would work. I'm thinking of just a sand substrate with a branch or two and a few rocks.

Not interesting, but a there are very many strains of guppies that are beautiful an would go well in that tank. Or look at Bettas on aquabid, they'd look great.

Not the most interesting in the world, but I just set up a 5g (not hex) with some silk plants and 2 pairs of Cnesterodon decemmaculatus (little livebearer from Uruguay).

i'd go with a pair or trio of guppies or some other small live bearer.
