So venting aside, it looks like you can usually sex these guys from dorsal fins (black blotch for female) my question is do these guys have to be a certain size to do this? I have a group of 5 that are between about 3-4". My trimacs seemed easier to sex at a smaller size :/

I would have thought that you could determine gender by the time they were 3-4". I was able to do so with the ones that I have kept in the past when they reached that size.

This was part of the problem i was having. Fins were really dark when i tried earlier. A couple of them lightened up and it looks like one of the small ones is a female.

Sometimes it's hard to tell with lyonsi at that size. IME once they establish a pecking order the black blotch in the females will be more pronounced
