I've been to the Katmai and seen the bears feeding on the salmon. The river is literally orange from all the salmon. The bears congregate in the rapids and other choke points and catch the female salmon coming through.

They eat only the roe and brains and leave the rest.

It's pretty amazing to see.

My avatar is a bear from the Katmai that was approaching us.

We (my family of four) were with a guide who had done this for 20 years and another tourist. We stayed very close together and tried not to surprise any bears. That one in my avatar got about 10 feet away from us, but it seemed more curious and playful than threatening.

In any event, the bears were far more interesting in eating salmon than us.

We probably saw more than 50 bears that day.
