I never really knew how important being a member to the Capital Cichlid Association would be until I began to get involved with the club.

In 2006, I decided to get back into Cichlids after so many years of watching spider webs take over my fish tanks. It was quite understandable with the transition of marriage and then complexities of work and family, but I felt it was time to keep some fish. I was tired of looking at my empty tanks and staring at my fish tank screen saver on my computer.

Nevertheless, I somehow decided that I would start up my fish room again, this time with African Cichlids. What sparked my curiosity with the species was because one of my business colleagues, who happens to be of the opposite sex was into African Cichlids.

Nonetheless, I was fascinated by them. Years ago, I had attempted to keep some Mbuna, but apparently I did not take care of them as I should have and so they died. You see, I was always into New World Cichlids since I was a little boy so they to me were easy to keep. I literally had a blue thumb when it came to them.

Now, I only had 3 tanks at the time, but hey, that was a lot for me back then. Who would of thought that years later 35 tanks were not enough. So I cycled my tanks, which were a 30g, 20L, and a 20high and proceeded to the local fish store. Back then "Totally Fish" was one of the hottest stores around and they stocked plenty of Africans. That day I purchased a variety of Mbuna and went home happy as can be.

The next day I had discovered that a new fish store was having its grand opening over the weekend. The name of the store was called "Scales" and I couldn't wait for the weekend to arrive, but when it did, I ran right over to the store to check it out and it was awesome.

The store was gigantic and had a large selection of tanks every where. There was an amazing array of African Cichlids that I had never seen before. That day I befriended a man who would be very influential in my life when it came to African Cichlids. His name was Mr. Bob Polatto and he was a breeder who introduced me to the species "Aulonocara."

To this day, I never forget how nice Bob was to me and how he reached out and took the time to explain everything about the famous "Peacock." His charisma and knowledge was very instrumental to me and basically got me hooked on African Cichlids. Of course the other 2 owners Andrew and Jim were very friendly to me as well. They later became my old friends.

Anyways, Bob Polatto at the time was providing Scales with most of the rare African Cichlids. I think his vision at the time was to showcase an array of cichlids that no other store had. And let me tell you, Bob had the most beautiful selection of Peacocks that I have ever seen to this date. I practically bought everything I could get my hands on.

And that's when it all started. I can guarantee you that I was in Scales almost every other day. And when you practically live in a store you become like family or they think you're a freakin crack head. LOL!

Now here is where the journey gets interesting. It was a Friday afternoon and I had decided to visit Scales again. I wanted to see if Bob had restocked the store with some new Peacocks, when I ran into Jim and he handed me a flyer to a Catfish Convention. I did not know there were fish conventions at the time, but he made it quite clear that I should attend this weekend because it would change my life.

It's funny how life is because Jim was right. I was so blown away by the Convention, it was like Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory , but for fish. This is where I actually met our past president Pat Kelly and our new president Francine Bethea. You see, the wonderful thing about the Catfish Convention and the hotel was that people could sell fish out of there rooms. And I so happened to walk into a hotel room full of tanks which were owned by Pat Kelly. And guess who was lounging around in the hotel room with Pat? It was Francine and Tracy Kelley.

Without a doubt, when I walked into the room my eyes were fixated on Pats Red Ruby Peacocks he was selling. There color looked incredible and the price was **** good. All I was thinking was how many I could buy and which tank I would put them in. Here is when Pat introduces himself and invites me to visit the Capital Cichlid associations Saturday meeting. I was kind of surprised to here that there were other fish fanatics like myself who gathered for the purpose collecting fish. I have to admit I was kind of curious and I promised Pat I would be at the next meeting in January.

Before I left the convention that day, I had the chance to witness my first fish auction. There is where I purchased a bag full of Petricolas and meet a very interesting individual named Ali who told me that I should join the CCA. He was right...

Well, it was January 2007 now and I was ready to attend my very first CCA meeting. It was a brisk Saturday morning, but I wasn't going to miss this for the world. When I arrived, one of the first people that I met was man by the name of "Frank Cowherd." It was he and "Bob Bock"who were nice enough to come up to me and introduce themselves. They asked me what kind of fish I had and how many tanks I owned, but all I can remember was talking there heads off about my obsession with the amazing Peacocks.

I remember walking into the meeting place and was surprised to see food and drinks set up on tables. There were a handful of people walking in with boxes of fish and everyone was so friendly. That's when I saw Pat and Francine and they came over to me and shook my hand I guess happy to see me. I was just thrilled to be there and didn't know what to do with myself.

Anyways, I do happen to recall the speaker that day. It was our very own Michael Barber speaking on this travels to Peru and it was fantastic. His presentation was witty and very informative and I was entertained. I was thinking, for $20 dollars this membership was a no brain'er. I mean, it was worth every penny to join and be a part of a fellowship of friends with the same interest as me...Cichlids.

That day, I left extremely happy and fulfilled knowing that I was a part of an organization that let me be open about my obsession. I loved fish and so did they. I didn't feel crazy or abnormal because of my addiction of collecting African Cichlid., I felt like I was home. I finally met some normal people who understood why I was in love with the Auloncara species. It wasn't only because of there beautiful colors or there unique behaviors or because of their fascinating mating rituals.

It was because of the complexities of recreating their environment and managing there aggression as well as the constant adjusting of their water quality that would emulate the waters of the Great Lake Malawi. I for a lack of a better word was "Hooked."

And to this day, I have made a ton a friends from being a part of the Capital Cichlid Association. I now have over 40 tanks and I am also the Membership chair and Vice President of the club now. I also have been to 2 American Cichlid Association Conventions and several CatFish Conventions as well as our very own AquaFest Convention. I even got a chance to enter some of my Peacocks into several fish shows. Plus, I was even featured in one of our BioTope magazines that we use to publish. My very own Red Empress Cichlid that won the "Peoples Choice Award" at the Catfish Convention, was on the front cover. Wow, so much has happened for me at the CCA and am so proud of that.

To top it off, I still have some of Bob Polattos African Cichlids with me and Pat Kelly's Peacocks at my home.

All in all, that is why I emphasis joining our club because of how immeasurable it is to be a part of something so special. There is access to our forum 24 hours a day and our meeting is only once a month. Trust me, I still feel the excitement of going to every meeting looking forward to seeing all my Cichlid friends. It's now a part of my life and it is what it is...a gathering of Cichlidholics.

Furthermore, the CCA is a place where families get together, children play and friends break bread and even get together afterwards for private gatherings. For example, there is nothing like kicking back and grabbing a few beers with friends while staring at a bunch of tanks talking fish. Priceless...

That is why I call the CCA, "The Best Cichlid Club in the Whole Entire World!"

So remember, "Membership has its Privileges!" Join us and be a part of the team and don't forget to renew your membership too.

Sincerely,

Fellow CCA Members,

My name is Bill, and I am addicted to this hobby.
Before you look down upon me and frown I have to be perfectly blunt with you...my addiction includes the great people from the Capital Cichlid Association.

My life is fish...Cichlids in particular.
I do have this little weak spot (ok, rather LARGE weak spot) for rare African Cichlids.

My addiction is right now at 20 tanks...oh yeah, and they live, oh wait, WE live with my wife of almost 16 years, Toni Anne, and my 14 year old son Joseph.

I am a very vocal member of the fish hobby. I travel as much as I can and as far as I can to do what else...hang out with fish and those who are addicted to the hobby as much as I am.

I am a huge supporter of the tropical fish industry and its retailers, wholesalers and even you...the home hobbyist.
Thru my website/forum, EastCoastCichlids.org, we have donated monies to a list of Who's Who in the Cichlid Industry:
The ACA, OCA, HCCC, NJAS, ACLC, Paul Loiselle Foundation, *****es of the ACA, The O'Malley Fund ( a fund for a deceased hobbyist in NJ who died and left a large family behind) and, of course, the CCA.
Over the past two years I have orchestrated trips and group buys to help out the hobbyist and the retailer.

If my passion can be measured for this hobby and for you I would measure it this way...
Have you ever heard me auction?
Well my passion is ten times louder than that.

I am writing to you today to ask you for your vote as Vice President of The CCA.
I believe that I am well-equipped and well-suited to lead this Club into it's biggest year and biggest event ever...CCAdoesACA 2011.

I thank you for taking the time to read this, and if you are on the fence about who to vote for may I add this...I'm working on my DC accent!

Thanking You,
Bill Barbito

As of today, the Capital Cichlid Association is on a path to host its 1st American Cichlid Association Convention in our Nation’s Capital. As your Vice President and Membership Chair, I am so very proud of our collective and how it has grown not only in size, but in diversity.

Therefore, being a CCA member is no longer a life style, it’s an attitude. It is a part of a family of friends, colleagues, brotherhood and fellowship like no other. Every monthly meeting feels like a Mini Annual Fish Convention with people of all ages, members from other states and a handful of children, who happen to be our future in the CCA.

Nonetheless, I am so happy to be apart of seeing our club grow to where it is today and to look forward to the potential of where it can be in the future. That is why it takes leadership, charisma and influence to elevate and sustain this wonderful organization to the place where it needs to go and that is up. Without a doubt, we need to solidify the right people to govern and manage our wonderful club. I love this club so much that I have considered running for Vice President again!

For that reason, I have always stated that this is the “Best Cichlid Club in the Whole Entire World!” Having said that, I really think our members are beginning to believe it.

Over the summer, I and handful of members traveled to the ACA Convention in Milwaukee to represent the club and boy did we ever. As your Vice President, I spent the whole week selling the club and passing out our business cards to every individual. I also had the great pleasure to introduce our great CCA does ACA video to the whole ACA collective at the banquet.

For those who have never heard of me, I have been a member of the CCA since 2007 and have done my very best to be influential with our new members and assist our President and Board members throughout the years.

Thanks to our Past President Francine and our President Pat, I was able to host our 1st Capital Cichlid Summer BBQ Picnic. It was such a hit that I hosted it again the following year. Through hard work and excellent organizational skills, the picnic was a success and is now a staple of our club.

As your Vice President & Membership Chair, I have been diligently reaching out to all our members. At every monthly gathering, my focus is to meet and greet each and every person in the world who attends our meeting. The idea is to make everyone feel comfortable and a part of our CCA family. I am for a lack of a better word, the Diplomat and Liaison of the club, but "Ambassador"sounds better.

As a hobbyist, I have kept Cichlids for over 20 years and enjoy collecting, breeding and selling them. I have over 35 tanks in my home and specialize in African Cichlids from the Great Lake Malawi. I also have a soft spot for my South American New World Cichlids too.

Here is a brief article on me from our very own Biotope so you have a better idea of who I am and why I’m asking for your vote to be re-elected as Vice President of the Capital Cichlid Association.

http://www.capitalcichlids.org/forum...ead.php?t=2788

My main initiative is to support cichlid conservation and the preservation of our club and hobby. I furthermore promise, to dedicate my time on an Outreach program that our very own Matt Quinn has devised and to take that plan and implement exciting innovative ideas that will reach out to new members. I will do my best to listen to the ideas from our club members and present them to the board of directors. I also believe in supporting our President in bringing in more sponsors for our Forum and Club. That is why it is vital for the club to invest in educating the public of our intent and through the support of our local fish stores and word of mouth of club members we can accomplish that.

Nevertheless, with your support I plan on being your Vice President again, especially with our convention right around the corner. I promise you that I will be there to organize and orchestrate every detail through leadership and support of our President. So do your best to come out to our October meeting and place your vote because now is the time to do your part.

Finally, I ask for your vote to be re-elected as your Vice President so that I can represent you and the "Best Cichlid Club in the Whole Entire World!!!"

I therefore want to choose the fish that best fit my water type and the ability I have for tank sizes. I am currnently leaning towards the Lake Tanganyikan group as well as considering some smaller South American species. I think I am lucky with the water I have, but after I test it I will know better what to keep.

Later that day....adding to my earlier info.
I have not moved, but the water parameters could have changed, I was thinking it best to just test and try to do this all from a point of knowledge and help me choose the fish I wish to keep based upon the water that is best suited.

I am trying to determine what I can do with my current space in the basement. I have a single room, finished, with berber carpet. Yeah, I know, carpeted..... None of that is really making me jump for joy as I have been in the lovely position of having a more commercial environment before where just a cement floor and very unfinished stands, etc. did fit into my plans.

Size:
The room is 16' in length and about 11'6" in width.

Room:
Standard Drywall, low ceiling, berber carpet.

Climate:
Standard central air and heat. Air conditioning and heat may be a problem as it gets cold in the summer and winter, expect to use tank heaters.

Access:
There is one window and two areas that are open access to the stairs and the other basement rooms. This will limit the placement of tanks due to wall space usage.

and now, for the ongoing saga........

I don't think I want the fish in my basement, not enough room. I am not a happy man.

Day one was really this past Friday (May 8, 2009) when I received six two to three inch gorgeous Electric Blue Jack Dempsey’s from Jeff Rapps. When they arrived, I put them in my 15 gallon with some regular Dempsey grow outs I had – little ones ranging from ½ - ¾ inches – for quarantine. They immediately found places to hide, not that there were many in a bare bottom tank with one piece of floating wood and a couple of those fake little bushy plants. Within a hour they were hanging out and exploring. I put a pinch of food in for the little ones, and the Blues were on it quick and on the smallest of the crew, too. All my grow outs are now around ¾ of an inch! Moreover, their color darkened up, they are absolutely stunning.

Friday and Saturday passed without incident, but I came home with a harem of Apistos and had to do a quick tank change around. The Blues were put in a heavily aquascaped tank 38 gallon with plenty of places to hide, along with the little Jacks. I assumed they would scatter for cover and rarely be seen again, until dinnertime. They are notoriously shy fish and the most common complaint I hear from fellow Blue guardians is, “I never see them.” To my surprise, all but one came back out into the open with ten or fifteen minutes of being put in the new home. I have a theory on why my Dempsey’s seem to be more social than others, after copious hours of research, reading forums and all the scientific information I could find about Jack Dempsey’s, I have come to the conclusion that when they are young they should be kept in larger groups. In the wild, they band together as there is a certain safety in numbers. Watching these guys hang out in a tight little group strengthens my opinion regarding this. I suspect that the lone hider is a female; I’ve noticed with my breeding pair that my female tends to hide more often than my male. Although, I won’t know for sure until they start pairing up to breed as it is near impossible to sex an Electric Blue properly on sight and I don’t know how to vent a fish.

And, that brings us to today. Today’s fish keeping chore was to clean the JD Juvie tank, count, and try to sex as many as possible. I hate catching fish and doing this sort of thing, but there was one bonus, I would be catching the regular Jack Dempsey’s I want to use in the Electric Blue breeding program. They are just a shade smaller than the Blues and that’s a good thing since Blues don’t seem to have the same level of aggression as the regular JD’s. I chose my six carefully, three females and three most likely males. I’m not sure if this is absolutely true, but ancillary evidence is there seem to be more male Electric Blues sold than females so I probably should have pulled a four two ratio, but as I’m only planning on keeping two pair I decided to use a more standard three three. One of them, I have no clue what he/she is, is dark as pitch but has the loveliest shape I’ve seen. Each of them have a strong red line edging their dorsal fin, as both of the parents have that same line, I’m hoping that it might be a dominant trait and show up in Electrics when I start breeding them.

I debated on if I was ready to put the regular Jacks in with the Electrics. I’ve had no hiccups so far and I have no reason to believe that the Blues needed quarantine. My main concern is aggression in the tank. On one hand, putting twelve two to three inch fish in a 38 gallon with uber filtration isn’t a big deal, but putting twelve cichlids in a 38 gallon is another story, so I debated. Did I mention how much I hate catching fish? In the end, I decided to put them in with their soon to be mates. I scooped them up; three at a time and in they went. The Blues startled and scattered into the rocks chased by the regular Jacks and in went the next three and they too dove right for the rocks. Maybe thirty seconds later, they all popped out – including the little lady who likes to hang out there most of the day. It’s been several hours now since I put the regular JD’s in, they were a bit stressed and washed out when they got home. Now, not only are they all colored up, the Blues have gone even a deeper blue.

Stage one, the process of pairing off Electric Blues with Regular Jack Dempsey fish to produce Blue Gene Jack Dempsey’s has started.

I have plans to go to graduate school, but not until 2010. I will be going for my master's in teaching (I think). I want to teach college art, because I am truly envious of my professors and the responsibilities and awesome work they provide for their students. It is absolutely incredible what they do.
