View Full Version : All-Aquarium Catfish Convention 2010
Andrew
06-03-2010, 9:53 AM
Website is now live at http://www.catfish2010.com (http://www.catfish2010.com/)!
Please note the new location: Fairfax, VA. Bigger, better, cheaper.
Rift Lake folks? We have two speakers on catfishes from the lakes. Ad Konings will do his first ever catfish presentation showing us pictures and video of these guys in their natural habitats. Jeremy Wright revised Lake Tanganyika Synodontis a few years ago and will tell us about those fishes including how to tell them apart.
New World people? Corydoras Master Ian Fuller will be back with updated Cory programs. Possibly best of all, we're bringing in someone from Brazil to tell us about the amazing Rio Xingu Plecos, Lucia Rapp Py-Daniel. And the friendly wood carver, Brian Walsh, will be talking about his favorite Doradid cats.
And of course, there's lots more including a fish show, auction, etc., etc.

Its a shame they moved the convention to VA, but if its bigger and cheaper, then the move was the right decision.
I'll be there, I'll just try to hitch a ride if possible.

I will be there FOR SURE!
This is one of the few conventions that, for one reason or another, I have never been able to attend. BUT THAT CHANGES THIS YEAR! Very excited! :jumpy: <--- hey, she should be a blonde!
Ian is one of my ALL TIME favorite cory experts, and I love hearing him speak. I ALWAYS learn something from him, every time.
Plus, it is my b'day during the convention. What better way for me to spend my b'day than at a fish convention!!?

WOOT !! my favorite convention :) For many reasons.... but most of all I get to hang with my two favorite girls :) Barbie and Julie :)
They aren't sure if they are selling this year or not?? :( We have to figure out a way to get Julies fish racks down for her from PA as it wouldn't be the same without her room ! She sold her truck. Beer and Fish !!!
Cool line up Andrew....something different :)
I'm totally pumped. Will definitely be there. :party0006:

Andrew,
Unless I miss my guess, Barbie and I beat you all to it, as she ran up and registered before we left the last convention! I think we'll have to ante up some money as the price went up a bit, but no worries!!
And if I'm wrong, let me know! This is definitely one convention that both Barbie and I won't miss!!

No worries, Sarah, I'll figure out a way to get the rack there... either borrow my gf's truck, or rent a van. Party on the 9th floor ought to be a hoot!! Great idea Andrew, my kudos to whomever thought that one up!!
Of course, there was always a party in our room, I just wonder why theybother to include beds in it as we never seem to get much sleep!!

Sherry's idea for the hall party. Whomever wants to sell fish from their room, book the 9th floor. On Friday night there will be hospitality suites on both ends of the hallway, and all the room vendors in between.

I'm just glad it's happening... I got so sad at the banquet two years ago. So, thank you PVAS for working your butts off putting on two events :)
You've got a great thing going IMO.... the only catfish convention in the world ;) ( I think at least? ) It can only get bigger :)
I know I'm not a pvas member.... but if you see me and you need help let me know :)

There's only one problem with this thing....for a catfish convention, last time there were very few catfish in the auction. Maybe this will change this time around???

06-06-2010, 7:47 AM
I remember some pretty cool catfish in the last auction that were donated to make planet catfish some cash to keep the site running.
I do remember a lot of other stuff as well, but most were at least catfish friendly. I will admit the first year was best when they ordered wild fish in for the auction. I'm guessing that wasn't cost effective .... but it was very cool.
I know I will bring more catfish this year.... because I have more

Okay, this is a little over a month away.
But the deadline for putting fish in the show comes up first.
Here are a couple of the rules that relate to when the deadlines are.
For the first ten fish registered by a single person, the entry fee per fish will be $3.00 if pre-registered, and $4.00 if registered after October 8, 2010. Any additional fish after ten paid registered fish by the same person will be free. All entry fees should accompany the Show Registration Form.
There is no limit to the number of fish entered in the Show.
Fish may be pre-registered for the Show (by Thursday, October 14, 2010), by electronic means (email and Paypal), conventional mail (postmarked by October 8, 2010), or email arrangements. Pre-registration is encouraged to accurately plan for tanks, tables, show racks, and layout for the show. Fish entries will be accepted at the door for the Show at the $4.00 fee.
Now remember that the rules are set for an all species show. What am I talking about? There are only a few classes for Cichlids. So you will have all African cichlids in the same class etc. But thats okay.
I still say, lets see if the Cichid section can out number the Catfish. LOL
Again this is a good chance to practice for the ACA. Take your fish, see how it reacts. Find out now what you need to bring or don't need. Get the experiance while you can.

I contacted the show folks at PVAS about this and requested that the single class for Malawi, Tanganyika and Victoria be split... makes a lot of sense to me...
Haven't heard back..

Someone else tried to get them to change that a few years back (his name is not allowed to be mentioned.) LOL
I too would like to see more classes but its their choice. At this point they would probably not change it as its been advertised for months.
I will just have to woop on everyone in the class thats all. LOL.
Kidding of course. I am still trying to decide if I am showing.
Still new to the whole fish show game, but I like the idea of splitting classes for the African cichlids. I think it would encourage more people to bring fish to show. meh.
Unfortunately, can't make it anyway.... something came up for that weekend. :(

Uh, guys, you might try to remember that this is a catfish convention. When I was active in PVAS and a part of the convention, I actually lobbied for awhile to restrict the show to catfish. If you wanted a Cichlid show, you could have gotten off your butts and had and event with one this fall. Gee, I wonder if anyone suggested that. Naaaaaahhhh.
You want Cichlids, again, get off your butts and come to Cleveland like your president does. Too far for you complainers? Ya probably.
George who is usually the complainer. Not this time.
By the way, when you go to the Catfish Fest, stop by my Margarita Tours table and buy a raffle ticket. You could go to the Amazon for free like I did this summer.

Cristy let me know that they based the classes on participation in prior shows....and that if they find that there are enough fish in any class, they may split it then.
Good stuff!

Yes, Banquets are almost always closed well in advance.
Usually the club has to give the hotel the number for the banquet around a week in advance so they can plan things like how much food, tables, manpower etc.
Usually the same is true for some other items like the fish show.
I think we closed the fish show entries 3 days before Aquafest.
Usually they close the fish show entries almost a month before the ACA conventions.
I think they are accepting fish show entries as swim-in's for the catfish convention. For me it would make it hard. How many tanks does the club need to set up if you don't know how many fish are coming ? LOL
Anyway you can still register the day of. Just not for Banquet.

It was a great time. I went Thursday-Sunday and made the best of having a convention like that this close to my house. Scored some awesome plecos, discus, kens fish food, pleco caves, freebies and handouts and even bought a ticket for the Amazon collecting trip raffle. What a weekend!!!!!!I cant wait till ACA!!

I just got back from the auction. There were a few cool things but not much in the way of cichlids. I picked up some juvie synodontis petricola and some red tail goodeids (from Mr. Killie).
I hope you paid a lot for those goodeids :)
I got some petricolas too. They are swimming around very nicely with some 3/4" peacock fry.

I think I have finally completely recovered from Saturday night. I also suspect that I made a friend and at least one enemy that I don't even know about. Next time I have to stay away from Andrew and his booze, oh such gooood booze too. If I T'ed anyone off, blame Andrew.
It was good to see so many CCA'ers. Matt made himself and all of us look good. Rememeber to shake his hand at the next meeting.

LOOKS LIKE EVERYONE HAD A BLAST. WAY TO GO GUYS!
Thanks to all who worked so hard to make such a great event! Talks were great, I met alot of new friends, met up with some old ones, etc.
I just don't understand one thing tho... I'm such a nice, quiet person, and yet the hotel *police* kept coming to see us! Guess they just liked our catfish.

They know its the quiet ones you have to worry about. For being such a quiet person, you were always surrounded by "not so quiet" guests. Your room did become known as the party room since it was always the last one with the door open.
Funny how hotel police came up for people talking but they didn't come up when bill and I were running the luggage cart up and down the hall. They even came out on friday night and yelled at us for being too loud outside:wacko:.
It was a great convention though, everyone seemed to have a great time and there were some great fish and speakers to see. If that was a preview for what ACA 2011 will be I can't wait!:jumpy:

Mike, practice on toes-raises to strenghten your calves...you're going to have a lot of pushing to do come July.
I was in a room with about 20 people that had the Hotel Manager come in. I was as quiet as a church mouse sitting on a couch next to George. It's one of the very few times in my life that security was NOT there for me.
D@mn loudmouths from Texas...LOL.
Andrew, you were phenomenal...absolutely phenomenal.
(ps...thanks for the 2am chat we had ;))

I can't accept all the praise for this... PVAS really showed what it's made of this year. And CCA represented very well too. Good peeps, all.
As for being a preview of the ACA, yes and no. Yes, in that you saw what a motivated and energetic club can do. Yes, in that it was a heck of a lot of fun. No, in that the ACA has its own culture that is different. And definitely no, in that 2011 will be a CCA event with its own flavor.

Yeah, it was a blast but remember that with our
convention we will be doing all of the work.
Will be a little harder.

I concur with George and Andrew. Thanx PVAS! I had a great time:))) In retrospect, I should of gotten a room because traffic for one was terrible just to get there. I don't know what was going on with 495, but it was at least a 2 hour wait. Next time I'll stay there for the weekend.
Congratz to PVAS for a good show. It was also fun to see all the VA people happy as can be, probably because they only lived 3-5 miles away. LOL! Good for them.:D
BTW Andrew, it was really cool to hang with Jim and share a bunch of stories about the good ole days. He's got some pretty cool shoes too;) And that 10yr old bottle of Baldino was simply delectable. LOL!
