View Full Version : FRY GROW-OUT CONTEST - Anyone Interested?

Something that might be fun to do over the summer break is a FRY GROW-OUT CONTEST.
Anyone interested?
I've "borrowed" the rules from the club in Cinci (see below). We can change or adapt them as we see fit.
They're using gouramis (BORING!) I'm willing to donate two batches - probably 30+ Hap "ruby" green babies (stripped on the same day) to the cause. They're an ACA CARES species and are really pretty.
I'm thinking that starting in June and growing out until Sept or Oct would provide a good opportunity for growth development but I'm open for ideas.
Let me know if you'd like to participate and if you have any suggestions for how to run the contest!
One idea: The winner writes a short article about how they grew out the nices fish :)
Another idea: Extra fish (beyond a trio or whatever that the participants want) could be auctioned off as a donation to the club.
Thanks,
Matt
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m thinking the contest would work like this:
Contestants would enter by replying to a Forum Topic – and / or by
Signing up at the June Meeting.
A nominal entry fee of ($5-$10) would be charged (and donated to the club).
Contestants would each receive a bag containing 4-6 fry at the May Meeting. (Everyone would receive the same number of fry – the variable would be determined by the number of contestants).
The rest of the rules would be pretty simple… take your fry home, grow them out in your aquarium for three months – and bring your BEST PAIR to the September meeting – in a small aquarium or bowl.
The BEST PAIR would be determined on Size, Color, and Condition – not strictly on size alone.
The winner would receive the total of the entry fees – and – maybe more.

I'm in. But I think the fish may need to be re-thought if there are many participants. Mouthbrooders are not that prolific (unless, do you have quite a few breeders?). Plus, if the eggs are pulled from multiple females, they could very well be of different ages already. One way to get around that would be to use a substrate spawner-that way you know all the eggs were laid on the same day. I have some black belts that seem to be pairing off, and I would be willing to put some of those fry towards the competition, assuming all goes well and I get fry. They seem to have picked a spawning site and are beating on the other blackbelts in the tank. But this would be the first spawn for them and they are young fish.
Otherwise, I suppose the honor system would be in effect-I mean, I already have some ruby greens, so what's to say I don't use them? I wouldn't. Perhaps we add a monthly check-in with photos on the forum?

Sounds simple enough and I just set up a grow out so I'm def in. At least on my end the rules sound simple and good enough and it sounds like something fun to do.

Do you think that there should be penalties for deaths or anything like that? And I have raised your ruby greens before and I know how beautiful they are. However the second that male gets scared and mine are very skittish they tend to lose a lot of their color. In a room with 100 people I don't see them doing the species justice.
I think it sounds like a really cool idea though.

Yeah, but you have to have enough fry for the contest. This has only been posted a little more than an hour, and by my count there are 10 people interested already. That's already 40 fry. How prolific are the ruby greens? I am sure there will be more people interested as the day goes on.

Great feedback all!
I stripped both females on the same day and into the same tank. The alpha in my colony breeds with all willing females, usually the day after a big water change (and sleeps the next day in his PVC tube), so the fry are all within a day or two of each other at most. I can't tell the difference.
I agree that it's hard to get Vics to settle down in show-type situations. Another wrinkle to the competition could be getting them to show well (practice for Aquafest and other shows).
One other concern is having a cash prize. Others have done it but maybe we could be more creative?
dogofwar
05-12-2009, 12:50 PM
Once they get going, they're pretty darn prolific. I think I have about 40 fry. I'll see when I get home.
Anyone have oodles of another kind of fry? Or maybe we can do two contests (a new world and an old world?)...

This was mentioned a year ago and a bunch of people boo hoo'ed it so it never went any further.
Matt, I like it. Like others said its good to raise endangered fish, it's good to have a little competition in the club. Its good for bragging rights.
I am not sure I would make it about money.
How about I provide one of the good embroidered club shirts as the prize? To me money just puts a bad feeling on it? Maybe just me.
Since this is the first one, maybe limit it to the first 10 or 12 people that respond on here and only have 3 fish to make sure you have enough? A benny of being on the forum.
I agree with Sarah, this could be a forum contest. Not something that would need to be voted on by the board. Not sponsored by the club per say but the forum.?
I say June July August and bring fish in at the September meeting and show them like a bowl show. The person brings a small tank or bowl. No lights. Number them so that the judges do not know whos fish they are. 3 persons judge them and announce at the meeting. ?
You must be at the June and September meetings to participate.

I boo'd it last year for a couple reasons. But as soon as you put a CARES fish in I'm ALL for it. Plus it's a pretty fish !
I don't like the money prize either... but if the people participating want money... go for it. Up to you guys.
I don't think this should be about money.. nor do I think the club should make money on this. It's a cares fish !!
We could even have another contest on who can spawn the fish first.

Personally, I like money. Can't live without it, quite frankly. Can't eat. Can't watch TV. Can't call anyone or write anyone. Can't have fish without it either. Always have a good feeling about money. If the club doesn't want to get money from the effort, perhaps the club donates it to the CARES program or one of the other programs the ACA has (Jordan Fund, Loiselle Fund).
But as for the prize, I say keep it money, chances are it will end up going right back into the auction or raffle tickets at the meeting anyway.

I like the shirt as a prize idea... or maybe a gift certificate to buy something from the CCA store. And a certificate :) Entry fees could go to support club programs...
I really like the idea of providing extra recognition to whoever breeds them first. Its actually not impossible that they wouldn't breed before Sept...and certainly before the end of the year!

I was the other one against it. Still am, but I won't stop others from doing it. Money as a prize is not a good idea IMO. It will eventually lead to problems. Maybe not this time around, but later on. I like the shirt idea or Cafe Press gift certificate.

I also boo'ed it for many of the reasons mentioned above. I did not like the money prize idea specifically. I was also concerned that the welfare of the fish for natural growth and progression would be bypassed to get the biggest, prettiest fish possible which might mean a diet that is not in the fish's best interest. Just a thought.
I like Sarah's idea more than a grow out contest. Who gets the fish to spawn first successfully (six fry to donate to an auction?) This would benefit the CARES program in a better capacity I think.
longstocking
05-12-2009, 3:40 PM
well, if someone over feeds this fish... good chance it will die.
The reason I boo'd it was the over feeding issue. I probably won't win because I won't overfeed them....
It will still be fun.
I think we could do two contests instead one. More fun that way :)

05-12-2009, 3:41 PM
I think you could get 2 contest out of this really. And I dunno about everyone else but I'm pretty good with the honor system and feel like most in this club are not of the irresponsible kind and would keep the fishes welfare first. After all it's helping an endangered fish.
You beat me to it Sarah!

05-12-2009, 3:46 PM
Judging for condition and appearance in addition to size reduces the incentive to overfeed...
I'm all for giving out a second award (German-paper certificate) for first bred!
McFluffrichromis
05-12-2009, 3:56 PM
So, this is what we have so far I think.
Start: June meeting - fry handout
Rules: feed fish (do not overfeed), (penalty for death?)
End: September meeting - bring grow outs back in.
Judging: size, condition, and appearance
Prize: Winner Certificate and bragging. (no money)
I personally will be feeding fish as I normally do. I just want to see how my methods as they are compare to that of others in the club. I think that with the fish being on the CARES list will help prevent people from abusing their fish. I would really hope that people that are in this club care enough for fish to not mistreat them. Money being involved could cause this problem thats why I am against the money thing too.
Seems pretty simple. I can't wait.

Just to add my $.02 - i once talked to the SWMAS about their program because I was thinking of someday doing it at ACLC. They had 2 things in their rules that I thought were good.
1. It required that all surviving fry that were raised be brought in for judging. They felt it prevented any from being raised separately just for the contest. Probably not necessary but...
2. The winner had to submit an article about raising the fry, for their newsletter (SWAM) in order to receive the prize......GREAT IDEA!

I like the idea about prizes for best fish and also first fry but what if someone gets stuck with all males or all females. These fish need the other sex not only to color up but to produce fry. The fish will look very dull if someone gets stuck with only one sex, and then they cant even be involved in the secondary contest.

I might be willing to do this with brichardi or reganochromis fry. Now breeding reganochromis... lol.. a bit of a challenge.
Vics or malawi fish are best for this... they spawn young and grow fast.
Not the case with tangs.

If there is still room for an additional contestant, I am in. Sounds like fun and a challenge and I'd end up with some great fish, as would everyone else in the contest.
I like the idea of having to bring all fry back to the Sept meeting. But then everyone would only bring back the two best if that was allowed and that seems OK also. SO either way, fine with me.
The article sounds like a good idea, but then do not put a 1000 word requirement on it. LOL It might be a mighty short article.

Agreed most definitely on that. The contest would have to be stretched out over a much longer time frame for Tangs, especially for breeding. But I couldn't resist the opportunity to nominate you to donate some ilangi :D. If this is a hit, and I suspect it will be... Sweet - filters are better than money anyway :)
Just got home...so I'll do a (rough) count of babies - they're about 2-3 weeks post release and maybe 1/3" - to see how many contestants.
I think that 4 fish/contestant is probably the minimum to ensure that everyone gets both sexes. Might not have enough for everyone to participate this time but anyone who doesn't get to participate this time should be first on the list next time.
I've got pairs of Crytoheros myrnae and nanoluteus, which are both substrate spawners and ACA CARES fish, which will have more fry by summers end (not to jinx myself). Unless someone has some additional colonies of another kind of Victorian going. I think that there were some nubila/nubilus a couple of auctions ago. Great fish and quite prolific (too bad I sold all of mine in Sacramento).

We're still on for the FRY GROW OUT CONTEST for the JUNE MEETING.
I'm not going to be able to attend, but Richard (Submariner) will be bringing the fish.
Here's how it's going to work:
Start: June meeting - fry handout (4 fish each). Fish will be handed out in order of sign up - see below for order. $8 each to enter the contest (to be donated to the club).
End: September meeting - bring fish back to Sept meeting. Display all fish in flat-sided bowl or small tank (like a bowl show/fish show) for judging
Judging: size, condition, and appearance.
Prize: Winner Certificate and bragging. Another winner for first to successfully breed them (might be later then Sept).
Requirement by winner(s): write an article for the Biotope
Requirement by all participants who are ACA members: register the fish with ACA CARES
I have about 40 fish @ 1/2", so there should be enough for 9-10 participants. Anyone who said that they would like to participate but doesn't get to participate in this round...will be first in line for the next grow out contest. To participate you need to be at the meeting, pay the entry fee, and want to participate :)
The order of sign up is as follows:

2. Kbeaudean
3. Prince
4. iamzrad

I'm afraid of jinxing myself... but two are about twice the size they started at, the other two are a bit smaller but I can see a sheen of color on at least three of them. They are mainly grazing on the aglae I put in the tank from guppy tank - I've been supplimenting every two or three days.
I thought i had lost one of them, they are skittish fish and it's a heavily aquascaped tank - I finally saw all four the other day. They were all grazing on the plants.

Actually, I'm starving mine... they are in a heavily planted 5 gallon all by themselves. 90% of their food they get from grazing on the plants and the extra algae I provide them from a different tank that grows alage like mad! In my first pic - the rock to the right I added that one when I was done cleaning. Once a week (or if I want to get pictures of the buggers) I add some regular tetra min flake.

I think the filter went south. It looks like it is working, plenty of water movement on the intake area, but there is almost no outflow. There is no sign of the fish anywhere in the tank. Very odd.
If the male has a stripe on the eye, I have one male and one female left. And the male has no color to speak of.
Contest aside, it really sucks to lose such a pretty fish.
Edited to say, Uhh, yeah. For those of you who figured out what happened... ewww I uh, found at least one of the fish. I normally keep a sponge on the intake for this very reason.

Is that where the gnomes put the underwear? I always wondered where the stash was kept.

I think I have a female holding. I am not able to get a long enough look at her to get the full confirmation but her mouth is big. I don't know for sure.
Any advice on how to handle babies from these fish. Am I supposed to remove the parents after they are released? I think I read that the parents will eat the babies?

Ok - so it seems like it's better to carry on with sept judging as originally planned than to postpone until I
Oct
I'd bet that chuck Rambo (the speaker) could fill in for me. He's been keeping vics since like 1972

Big mouth = holding
Depending on temp they'll hold for about 3 weeks; after a few days I either move females to their own tanks or a quiet tank with a breeder net. She'll spit on her own but I usually strip with a twist tie when I see free swimmers
The babies will eat crushed flake right awAy
Congrats

Oh well I will not be there.
If anyone in NOVA wants to grab them to take them to the meeting for me that would be cool. I will provide all equipment needed to keep them happy during the babysitting adventure.

Bring her and trade with someone who has an excess of males
The offer for 4 more for $8 donation to the club still stands (but I won't be able to deliver the fish until the oct meeting or aquafest)

I hope this helps Lady Lively!

We are surprised they did so well because they were in a 10 gal with a 3/4" one eyed Tropheus that was very cocky. So the Ruby Greens were pinned up under the sponge filter for the last 2 months. We thought we only had 3 left but Sat morning when we were getting the fish ready we had all 4. Like I said, I did not take any pictures and we gave the fish to David at the meeting so if you ask him maybe he will take some for you. Thanks again everyone!!

There we have it folks the key to winning this event is to have a cocky one-eyed Tropheus keeping the competitors pinned under a sponge filter for two months.
Interviews of the fish...
yes I did my best to hide for the last two months, that one-eyed what ever the heck was scaring the color out of me. When they took me out of there I finally got my color back!
:D
