I have the (free) meeting room at the Gaithersburg Branch of the Montgomery County Library reserved for May 6 for a class (for the general public) on setting up and maintaining an aquarium.

Thanks to Jim at Tropical Fish World for donating a 10g set-up to use in the demo and do a drawing to give away to one of the participants ... and Richard (Submariner) for volunteering to assist with the class!

Here are the details (from the Library's online event calendar):

Aquarium Care by Capital Cichlid Association
Event Type: Special Event
Date: 5/6/2009
Start Time: 7:00 PM
End Time: 8:00 PM
Library: Gaithersburg
Description: Learn how to care for tropical fish in your home aquarium. On-site demonstration.

I'm working on a better description to give them (for their online bulletin board) but feel free to click here to email to folks who might be interested in attending.

Excellent work Matt! That was very nice of Jim at TFW to have donated the supplies.
I'm sure we'll have a pretty good turn out.

Thanks Richard!

I also cleaned the fish tank at the library on Thurs AM - took about 20 mins (before work)...and the tank looks really nice (amazing what a little bit of Polyfilter will do).

The library folks are really excited. One even said, "You know my husband has a bunch of fish tanks..." Another recommended that - after a couple of sessions at the G'burg library - to start doing classes at other Montgomery County libraries.

WOW! Matt, this is a great activity! I have long thought that public libraries might be a good venue for fish classes. Let me know how it works out. Good publicity for CCA too!

Thanks Marge. I'm going to work out the slides / script...and - at least according to the folks at the G'burg library branch - most libraries in the Montgomery County system would be very supportive of this.

They're going to find out which ones have fish tanks.

There are a lot of dynamics involved in getting fish tanks in schools, stocking them with cichlids, doing classes, etc...this seems easier. And about 2,000 people per day use the G'burg library alone.

Matt, ask permission from the library if I could actually video tape the presentation. My plan was to film it and put on YouTube later in the week after editing and stuff. I was planning on creating something pretty neat for the club and to make you the next Dan Rather...CBS News!:))))))))

Anyways, well done Mate! Good Show! May 6th is on my calendar so just keep us up to date.

Thanx,

Lets start with this one. See how it goes. Then possibly pick up a few more.
It is all good when it comes to kids.

Did a kid win the tank?

dogofwar
05-07-2009, 8:52 AM
Thanks Chris - I thought that it went well and that we had pretty good turn-out for a rainy Wednesday night. The people who attended were really engaged and asked good questions.

The library set up a display in the kids section and featured kids books on fish and aquariums. They said that they handed out lots and lots of fliers.

A kid didn't win...but a really appreciative guy did. He was very excited. We took pictures :)

It would be great to get donations and/or cobble together a couple more 10g set-ups to do future classes / raffles.

Thanks to Richard, Marge, Bob, and Chris for the support...and Tropical Fish World for the tank set-up...

Lot of families too. When Matt asked at the end if people would be interested in him doing more classes like this, many people enthusiastically shouted out "Yeah"!

It was funny to hear all the little kids get excited when Matt turned on the tank. Hahahah

But I definitely think that people want more and I think this is the start of a good thing.

The magic of bubbles :)

Yes, and the presentation was Magical too. Excellent work Matt!

It was great to see Marge and Bob Bock( Sonny Disposition), and Chris(Cmcpart0422) come by and give us support. The library was packed, especially for a rainy evening and it was a nice surprise.

The format was right on the money and I believe we as a club should do more of these presentations for the future. Matt was very articulate and explained every facet of setting up a tank with enthusiasm. The kids were loving every second of it and the adults were excited as well.

As for the video, it's going to take me a week or so, maybe more because I have a lot on my plate right now at the office. The video turned out great. :D

I shot it on a digital camera and a regular 8mm video camera in order to capture the moment. It was an insurance plan in case one of the cameras crashed on me due to some unforeseen problem.

I had fun and look forward to the next one. By the way, I think we found our spokesman for the Club.;) Matt! LOL!:lol::lol:Hahaaa.

I think the most important thing about this presentation was that we walked away with a good feeling of being a part of something special. :)

Thanks everyone! It would be great to do more of these in our local areas / libraries.

The librarians at the G'Burg branch of the Montgomery County Library gave me the contact info for the other branches.

I'm more than happy to share the PPT presentation that I used for this...and other LFS have already expressed interest in donating set-ups to assist...

Anyone have any extra 10gs, small air pumps, etc. to donate? ;)

Matt

PS I'm at work so I can't see the pictures. Hopefully I'll be fitter for the next one!!

Maybe some of the other shops would want to donate. Perhaps they could give you coupons for newcomers. You could give them out as a consolation prize to people who don't win the raffle.
