Last Cichlid Fix For The Summer

Hi all. This is to let you know that I'm giving a talk to the GWAPANs at the end of the month, at the usual CCA meeting place (the Saddlebrook Police station). For those of you who fear cichlid-talk withdrawal during a summer without CCA meetings, this will help you to taper off gradually.

The talk reviews the sunfish family, and makes numerous comparisons to the cichlid family. Even though the two groups of fish are only distantly related, they're really very similar in a lot of ways.

Those of you who know me know that I'm an amateur naturalist who is really intrigued by organisms from different environments or families who nonetheless have similar adaptations. Like echidnas and hedgehogs. Or bats and birds. Anyway, the GWAPA folks have been kind enough to indulge my observations and speculations for a full presentation.

Since I'm not much of a photographer myself, the talk includes cichlid photos, from Forum members Bobby, Mojo, and Achillies.

The title " Are Sunfish Bizarro Cichlids Or AreCichlids Bizarro Sunfish ?" is from an old Seinfeld episode. The episode is a reference to the old superman comics.

My choice of the title was inspired by CCA's Richard Mendez, who frequently makes references to comic books on this Forum.

Here's a link with more info on the presentation: http://www.gwapa.org/events.html

During the talk I'll even explain what my avatar is.

Hope you can make it.

Sonny, I will do my best to make it, OK. :D

Nevertheless, it does sound interesting and I can't wait to hear about the famous, "Sunfish" you absolutely adore. CCA Members don't realize the passion you have for Sunfish and on June 28th would be the perfect opportunity to know more about that species.

See ya,

Ironically, I've got way more cichlids now than I do sunfish. What really fascinates me about the group is that they're starting to do in their much smaller area what the cichlids have done in their much larger area. Sunfish are like cichlids in miniature.

I'm guessing too, that they've had less time to do it in. Someone who knows geology, feel free to correct me, but I think much of North America was under glaciers as recently as 10-20,000 years ago. (Fish can't swim through ice, much less breed in it.)

Hope you guys can make it.

By the way Sonny, you looked quite comfortable up there at the podium. I also wanted to add that you were very funny and I am sure the GWAPA nation enjoyed every second of it.

It was a very detailed and fascinating presentation on Native fish in our region. Ya know, I can still remember my very first CCA meeting and how you kept asking Pat on when you could present your Sun Fish presentation, but it never happened.

I am happy you finally got it off your chest!!! Having said that, I believe our CCA President missed out on a wonderful lecture, maybe next year ;) I understand he couldn't make it because he was out at the LFS representing US and fishing for new members for our club.

We're proud of you Man!

Thanks Bob; I'll have a tank of Sunfish in short order (as if I need another kind of fish); and, yea, I'll get some plants as well.

Thanks, Paul. This club is a refuge for every fishkeeper whose spouse has said: "Maybe you should cut back on the tanks."

You gotta love 'em, but they just don't understand.
